Samuel was a leader in his own right and a successful missionary. Smith is commonly regarded as the first Latter Day Saint missionary following the organization of the Church of Christ by his brother Joseph. First missionary of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Samuel died of exposure to harsh weather out-riding a mob from Carthage where his brothers Joseph Smith Jr., Prophet; and Hyrum Smith, Patriarch; were brutally slain. He died just thirty days after his brothers.
He is buried with his family in the Smith Family Cemetery.
