Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Tilton-63

Based on his recorded age at the time of his death, Samuel Tilton was born close to 1638, most likely at Wolston, Warwickshire, where his father's second marriage took place in December of that year; he was a son of William Tilton,[1] and of either William's first wife -- Ursula Pycroft, who died on 5 May 1638 -- or, as has long been thought, second wife Susannah Tilton.

An alternative birth date for Samuel of 16 May or June 1640 was offered by William Haslet Jones in 1997, though his source is unclear.[2] The date contrasts with Jones's own acceptance, a decade earlier, of the age given for Samuel by his pastor (see below) at the time of his death in 1731 -- 93, which yields a calculated death year of 1638.

Family

Walter Goodwin Davis, in his 1947 "Ancestry of Phoebe Tilton", makes a solid case that Mary Tilton - who ultimately came to Martha's Vineyard with Samuel Tilton and his wife Hannah -- was an illegitimate but accepted daughter of Samuel by an unknown mother, who most probably died during the child's birth or infancy, prior to Samuel's marriage to Hannah Moulton in 1662.[2].

Child of Samuel Tilton and an unknown woman:

  1. Mary, abt 1658 in Lynn. Married Isaac Chase.

Samuel Tilton married Hannah Moulton, possibly the daughter of Thomas Moulton and Martha, although this is not at all proven according to the Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire (GDMNH).[3] Hannah died on 11 Apr 1720.)[4][5]

“Hannah, m. 17 Dec. 1662 Samuel Tilton of Hampt. is not surely Anne (7) who must have been older than Hannah’s husb.”

Children of Hannah Moulton and Samuel Tilton:

  1. Hannah, b. 15 Sept. 1663, at Hampton. Married Ananias Wing.
  2. William, b. 11 Nov. 1668, at Hampton. Married Abiah Mayhew.
  3. John, b. 23 Oct. 1670, at Hampton. Married Sarah Mayhew.
  4. Mary, b, abt 1677, at Tisbury. Married Samuel Allen.
  5. Josiah, b. 1680, at Chilmark. Married Bathsheba Mayhew.
  6. Rachel, b. 1685, at Chilmark. Married Jonathan Lambert.

Notes

ORIGINAL SETTLER OF MARTHAS VINEYARD ISL MASS. 5 Feb 1674: Granted 22 Acres in W Tisbury 18 Apr 1663: Guardian of Daniel Occupation: Carpenter Religion: Quaker Samuel married Hannah Moulton at Hampton, in the Province of New Hampshire, in mid-October of 1662; about a decade later, the couple removed to Martha's Vineyard, where they raised their family and where Samuel ultimately passed away at Chilmark in 1731. Charles Edward Banks, quoting from a death record in the diary of Rev. William Home of Chilmark, says that Samuel died "in the 94th year of his age".[6]

Research Notes

A paraphrased excerpt from Norfolk County records, found in an issue of the Essex Antiquarian from 1900, describes Samuel as the "eldest son" of Susannah "by her first husband".[7] The original record is needed to determine whether this maternity is the writer's assumption, or arises from a direct statement of either Susannah or her second husband Roger Shaw. Still unanswered is whether Samuel, if a 1638 child of William Tilton's first wife Ursula as suggested by Samuel's recorded age at death, would have been raised -- and referred to by -- his stepmother as if he were her own, as she would have raised him from the age of several months.
