Winterset Madisonian July 20, 1922

Samuel Clark Travis was born in Madison county, Iowa, May 16, 1860 and died in Des Moines, July 12, 1922, at the age of 62 years, 1 month and 26 days.

He was united in marriage to Miss Josie Marchel, Jan. 20, 1886. To this union were born two sons, Albert W. and Everett M., who died in infancy and two daughters, Mrs. Blanch R. King of Peru and Mrs. Fern E. Sayre of Ensign, Kansas, who with their mother survive him.

The family moved from Madison county, Iowa, to Gray county, Kans., where they resided until 1917, when they returned to Madison county, where they have since resided.

In his early life he was a member of the Elm Grove M. E. church; when in Kansas he was a member of the Ensign M. E. church and when he returned to Iowa, transferred to the Peru M. E. church.

Besides his wife and daughters, he leaves in bereavement six grandchildren; three brothers: William M. and Thomas H. of Winterset and John B. of Peru; three sisters: Mrs. Mary E. Foresman and Mrs. Lavina C. Schoenenberger of Winterset, and Mrs. Eva M. Foster of Great Bend, Kansas. He was a steadfast Christian, a devoted husband, an affectionate father and a friend to all who knew him.

Funeral services were conducted from the Peru M.E. church at 2 p.m. Friday, July 14th, by Rev. C. K. Corkill, pastor of the Menlo Methodist church, assisted by Rev. L. B. Shannon, pastor of the Peru church, after which he was laid to rest in the Peru cemetery
