About Samuel Wells

Samuel arrived into Nelson on the 4th of November 1841 aboard the WHITBY. This is of historic significance as it one of the three ships dispatched to survey and found the Nelson settlement. Martha and two sons William and John arrived aboard the MARY ANN on 8th of February 1842. This is also significant as this is considered to be one of the first four migrant ships into Nelson (Fifeshire, Mary Ann, Lloyds and Lord Auckland).

Accident to an Old Settler. - Mr. Samuel Wells, and old and highly respected settler living in Eighty-eight Valley, was thrown from his horse a few days ago while out pig hunting. Mr. Wells was thrown against a fence, and had some of his ribs fractured, but we are glad to hear he is doing well, and that tho injury is not likely to be serious

Nelson Evening Mail, Volume X, Issue 15, 18 January 1875, Page 2

A fire took place in Eightyeight Valley on Thursday morning last, which resulted in the destruction of the dwelling-house of Mr Samuel Wells. It appears that Mr Wells, who was working in his bush some ltttle distance from from the house, happened to look that way, when he observed a thick smoke coming out of the roof of the cottage. He at once hastened home, and found that his daughter, who was inside ironing at the tbe time, was quite unconscious of the house being on fire. It is supposed that a spark from the chimney had set a light to the roof, which was a thatched one. Owing to the walls being of mud, most of the things inside were saved. - Communicated
