About Samuel Amos Woolley
Biographical Summary:
"...Samuel Amos Woolley (1825-1900) was the son of John Woolley and Rachael Dilworth.
Samuel Amos Woolley was the youngest in a family of seven children. The family moved to Quincy, Illinois in 1839. Here Samuel was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He lived with his brother Edwin. In 1841 he worked in the quarry, cutting stone for the Nauvoo temple. Samuel and Catherine came to Utah in Sept. 1848 and built a home of logs in Salt Lake City.
In 1851 Samuel was called on a mission to India. On his return President Young sent him to Parowan to start a bucket industry. They took the necessary machinery and turned out jugs, pails, barrels, and tubs in different patterns and sizes. They were made of the cedar wood that grew so abundantly in that part of the state. The venture proved very successful. In 1861 President Young sent Samuel east and when he was ready to return he was put in command of a company of Scandinavian Saints. Although they did not speak English, the trip was successful and the company arrived in the valley Sept. 22, 1861.
Samuel worked in the lumber industry, built a steam sawmill in Little Cottonwood canyon and furnished timber for the Alta, Buffalo, and Flagstaff mines. He sold his lumber business in 1878 and bought a farm in the Sugarhouse district.
After the death of his former wives he married Elizabeth Ann Stevenson.
He was closely associated with Brigham Young who trusted him with many important matters pertaining to the Church. There was no faltering of his duty whether it was in business or religious assignments.
