About Samuel Yasgur
According to the 1920 census, he emigrated to the US in 1914, and was a meat merchant. According to Mark Schwartz's mother, Sonia Yasgur (who was Sam's first cousin) they were quite well to do and owned several buildings in NY. They bought Woodstock for Max because he was a sickly child and they wanted him to get as much fresh air and be away from NYC as often as possible.
UPDATE (JONATHAN KOPP, AUG 2017): A records search indicates that Samuel Yasgur was born around 1875, and that he died on April 4, 1940 in New York at 65 years old. http://www.ancientfaces.com/person/sam-yasgur/113020864
UPDATE: (JONATHAN KOPP, SEP 2017): A search on Ancestry.com has Sam Yasgur born in Minsk, Belarus in 1887 and dying in 1936 or 1937.
