Passing of Pioneers.
MRS. S. A. BARTLETT.
Mrs. Sarah Ann Bartlett, relict of the late Mr. Edmund Bartlett. who pre-deceased her by eight years, passed away at the residence of her son, Mr. A R. Bartlett, Bomaderry, where she resided the past thirty years, in her 91st year. Her death removes another of the pioneers, few of whom now remain, of the Shoalhaven district. Her parents,
Smith, came from England and settled at Botany, where Mr. Smith conducted a butchery, afterwards coming to Cambewarra, together with his wife and daughter, (the deceased) who was then quite a little girl, where they set tled on the land. The late Mrs Bartlett often related matters of interest dating back to the early days, when few white people were to be seen in this district, whilst there were a large number of aboriginals. For quite a number of years after she first came to Cambewarra horse vehicles were few and far between, and she would often refer to the time when, later in life, people who were supposed to be reasonably well off financially, thought they, if in the same position to-day would not be considered so, were able to secure a spring cart and harness enabling them to do it grand. She and her parents were not so fortunate for some years afterwards, and had to be content with a pair of bullocks and a slide as a means of transit. The '60 and '70 floods in the
Shoalhavcn River were other incidents in her life which left a firm impression on her mind ; when teo last-mentioned occurred she was in the employ the late Mr. James Monaghan, and they were marooned for many days when the waters had subsided she carried the baby, Mr. Percy Monaghan, to dry land. Mr. Monaghan is the Nowra Turncock. Later in life she married the late Edmund Bartlett, of Terera, and there was issue in family
other than the son already mentioned. Sarah Ann (Mrs. Gates), Thomas (WoolIongong), Mrs. A. McGuire (Bomaderry) Richard (Tamworth), and William (Pen- rith). The interment took place in the Church of England portion of the Nowra public cemetery yesterday (Thursday) afternoon, when a large circle of old friends attended at the graveside to pay their last tribute of respect.
