Biography

Note: Sarah Hinton, wife of Lewis Bryan, has been confused with Sarah, daughter of John Hinton, caused by info found in Emma Morehead Whitfield’s book.[1] That’s an error. In his 1784 will, John Hinton names his daughter Sarah Bryan, wife of Needham Bryan.

SARAH HINTON, daughter of William and Sophia Hinton, is estimated to have been born about 1749 in Johnston County, NC.

In 1761, her father died leaving her land on Mark Cr. if her brother Dempsey defaulted.

Her mother Sophia married next Maj/Col Needham Bryan II.

Sarah married LEWIS BRYAN, the eldest son of Wm & Elizabeth Bryan, of 'Springfield', 2 mi west of Smithfield, Johnston Co..

On February 23, 1776, Lewis Bryan gave to his daus Edney Bryan & Ridley Bryan for love & affection 320a on Marks Cr being part of a tract taken up by Wm Hinton desd deed for the land now in hands of Col. Needham Bryan.[2]

Lewis Bryan died Jan 4, 1780 or 1 Jun 1779 in Johnston County, North Carolina.

In 1782 Sarah Bryan gave to Lewis, son of said Sarah Bryan, for love & affection, all land on Marks Cr which came to her by will of William Hinton her father. Witn: Hardy Bryan, Sm Williams. May Crt 1782.[3]

He married October 26, 1769,[3] SARAH HINTON, daughter of William and Sophia Hinton of Hinton’s Quarter on the Neuse River near present Clayton, Johnston Co. She had inherited on the death of her father in 1761 land on Mark Cr. if her brother Dempsey defaulted. Her mother married-2 Maj/Col Needham Bryan II of Johnston County.

Note: Emma Morehead Whitfield[4] says Lewis married Sarah Hinton, daughter of Maj. John Hinton and Sallie Smith of Raleigh. This is an error. That Sarah married Needham Bryan III. We know this because John Hinton named in his 1784 will his daughter Sarah Bryan wife of Needham Bryan. Also John Hinton married Grizzel Kimbrough not Sallie Smith, thus various errors regarding Hintons in her research on the Whitfield/Bryans/Smith.
