That Neoma Smith is a child of Wyatt Smith and Peggy is suspectedbut not proven. She named a child Wyatt. Her son Preston moved to Laclede County, Missouri where William Brackin Smith was living.William Brackin's estate sale record includes a note on Preston H.Crawford.
Neoma Smith Crawford filed a land grant application in BledsoeCounty Tennessee saying that she married Jonathon H Crawford in 1819.Wyatt S. Crawford was born in 1820. Neoma Crawford, an apparent widow,was on the 1860 Bledsoe County census near Wyatt S. Crawford.

When Neoma's son William J. Crawford married his wife Mary Long inOklahoma, he stated on his marriage application that his parents were Jonathan Houston Crawford and O.C. Sarah Smith and that his mother was Cherokee Indian.

Also, her parents Wyatt and Margaret (Peggy) testified in court in TN…to verify John Curtis/Dolly Honeycutt marriage in Chatham NC in 1793. This would indicate a couple that was part of Anglo/settler society. Margaret in particular is a little mysterious at this point, but the fact that she is allowed to testify in court and has knowledge of a marriage in Chatham NC in early 1790s wouldn’t point to a connection with a Cherokee community. This is the ancestor of U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren that she claims is Native American and lends her her Cherokee history. This is extremely unlikely, as this woman's husband Jonathan Crawford was a member of a militia who rounded up Cherokees and forced them into confinement to await the Trail of Tears. Sarah is most likely half Swedish and half English, Scottish, or German.

Bustamante calculated that Warren’s pure Native American ancestor appears in her family tree “in the range of 6-10 generations ago.” That timing fits Warren’s family lore, passed down during her Oklahoma upbringing, that her great-great-great-grandmother, O.C. Sarah Smith, was at least partially Native American.
