About Sarah Dalton

Sarah (Sally) Dalton was born in about 1799 in , Bucks, Pennsylvania. She died in 1815. She was sealed to her parents on 31 May 1882 in the St. George Utah temple. She was baptized on 13 Aug 1843. She was endowed on 31 May 1882.

Our history tells us Sarah Dalton died in 1813 when she was 16 years old. We can not know the cause of her death, because many children died of measles, diphteria, small pox, scaret fever and just plain old accidents. She may of been buried in Dalton Hollow grounds but was probably buried in the old cemetery of the Wysox Presbyterian Church.

Here is something interesting found in the local newspaper of the time that may tell us more about the death of Sarah Dalton. Could she have been named Lydia. As far as we know there were only our Dalton's living in Wysox at this time.

The Gleaner 1815

Published on Friday, at Wilkes-Barre by Charles Miner

6 Jan. 1815

Died - At Wysox within a short time, three melancholy and fatal accidents have happened. Mrs. Lydia STROPE was thrown from a light waggon, by the horse's suddenly starting - She survived the fall but a few seconds.

Died - A child of Nathaniel HICOCK jr. was so burnt by its clothes taking fire, that medical assistance was called in vain, and after four days of pain breathed its last.

Died - On Wednesday the 28th December, Miss Lydia DOLTON, aged about 15 years, fell asleep by the fire, and the candle is supposed to have over set in her lap. The flame of her clothes awoke her in distraction. She ran out of doors and could not be caught until she was so dreadfully burnt that she survived only till Friday night.

Could Sarah Dalton's full name be Lydia Sarah Dalton?

The cemetery is located on 187 North behind the Wysox Presbyterian Church and the Wysox Elementary School. First burials in Wysox were made on the slope toward the river just beyond the Madill house, south of the national highway number six, and also south of the railroad. Here the first burial was that of Hermonos Van Vankenburg (probably prior to May 19, 1778, according to Craft, p. 63), who with the Stropes had settled on the river flat below, just west of the mouth of the Wysox Creek. Other burials followed, including probably Issac Van Valkenburg and his wife who are said to have died after 1785 (Craft, p. 455), Sebastian Strope (June 4, 1805) and his wife about 1814. According to the Memorial Paper written by Edward E. Hoagland for the Centennial of 1928, "When the railroad was put through this valley in 1869, it became necessary to remove the cemetery that was near Dr. Madill's, and many of the families who had ancestors buried there had them removed to the cemetery back of the church. There were few costly markers in those days, and most of the graves were marked by a stone of local origin that was not hard enough to long withstand the erosion of the elements. Hence, it is to be lamented there is a section of this cemetery where it cannot be determined who is buried there, for there are no inscriptions remaining on the markers.
