daughter of Richard & Susanna Dillon Wood, wife of 1) James Frederick Haworth, 2) Peter Ruble (after 1757). Mother of 7 children by James, 4 children by Peter.

Following husband(James) death, Sarah was left with six young children: Richard 12, Jemima 10, George 8, James 6, Elizabeth 3, and Sarah 1.

Hopewell Meeting on Sept. 5, 1757 petitioned the Meeting for Sufferings of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting for assistance naming eleven families in need. Among them was Sarah Haworth, a widow and young children. She had lost 12 cows and was allowed three pounds.

Some time after 1757, Sarah married Peter Ruble and had one son and three daughters, names unknown.

  • George Haworth's Marriage.

On September 28, 1710 at Buckingham, Pennsylvania, George Haworth married Sarah Scarborough, daughter of John and Mary Scarborough. Their marriage certificate is recorded in the Friends' Library, 142 W 16th Street, Philadelphia.

It reads:

"Whereas George Haworth of ye Township of Makefield in ye County of Bucks & Province of Pennsylvania, Weaver, and Sarah Scarborough, daughter of John Scarborough of ye township Solebury in ye county and province aforesaid, spinster, having intentions of taking each other in marriage did publish ye same before several monthly meetings of ye people called Quakers in ye county aforesaid according to ye good order used amongst ye, whose proceedings therein after a deliberate consideration thereof & having consent of relations and parties concerned nothing appearing to obstruct were approved of by ye at meetings."

"Now these are to certify all whome it may concern yt for ye full accomplishment of their said intentions this 28th day of 9 mo/anno 1710 they ye sd George Haworth and Sarah Scarborough appeared in a publick meeting of ye said people and other matt together at their usual meeting house in ye township of Buckingham and County aforesaid and ye ad George Haworth taking ye ad Sarah Scarborough by ye hand did in a solemn manner openly declare yt he took her to be his wife and did likewise promise to be to her a true and loving and faithfull husband untill death should seperate ym & yn and there in the said assembly she ye ad Sarah Scarborough did likewise declare yt she took ye ad George Haworth to be her husband promising to be unto him a loving and faithfull and true wife untill death should seperate them and moreover ye ad George-Haworth & Sarah Scarborough, (she according to ye custom of marriage assuming ye name of her husband) as a further confirmation thereof did then and there to those present sett their hands & we whose names are hereunder subscribed being amongst others psent at ye solemnization of their ad marriage and subscription in manner aforesaid as witnesses thereunto have also to these psents set our hands ye day & year above written."

GEORGE HAWORTH SARAH HAWORTH


Often referred to as the immigrant,George arrived in America in 1699 on the ship "Brittania." He first visited a sister, Mary, wife of John Myers,who was already in America,then went to Philadelphia and wrote a letter from there dated August 26,1699. He lived in Bristol Township,Bucks County, Pennsylvania before buying land. In 1702 he bought 450 acres near Cottage Hill,in the North corner of Buckingham Township, Bucks County,Pennsylvania. He lived in Makefield Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania on September 28,1710. After their marriage, George and Sarah settled in Upper Buckingham Township, Bucks County,Pennsylvania. They lived for a time in a cabin built for them on the Burn Brindle Hill property, just below John Scarborough's house*. The eldest children were born there. Later they lived near Lahaska,Solebury Township,Bucks County,Pennsylvania.

George was a linen weaver and farmer. He and Sarah were members of the Falls Monthly Meeting, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. George was a Quaker in England. His farm was located about four miles from Doylestown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and a little over a mile from Mechanicsville, Bucks County, Pennsylvania; Durham Road went across one end of the farm and Milton (now Carversville) Road along one side; Cottage Hill was on Milton Road two miles from Durham Road. per Betty J.
