About Sarah Elizabeth Lewis
Jeremiah Lewis, our first identified Lewis ancestor, was probably born about 1720. Place of birth, and names of parents not known to us. He died in 1792 Anson Co. NC, leaving a will.
Sarah, his wife, survived him. Her parentage, birthplace, and time and place of death are not known.
The first record, known to be of this couple, is a deed in Granville Co. NC, when Jeremiah bought land from Jacob Slaughter in March 1759. "Indenture (deed) made the XIVth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and fifty nine in the XXXII year of the Reign of our Soverign Lord George the Second of Great Britain, France, Ireland, King, between Jacob Slaughter of Granville County, Province of North Carolina, Weaver, of the one part and Jeremiah Lewis of this county plantor of this other part.....in consideration of the sum of Eight Pounds Sterling money.....a parcel of land.....in the County of Granville aforesaid on Shelton's Creek." This land was a part of an original grant from the Earl of Granville to Jacob Slaughter.
Five years later, the names of Jeremiah Lewis and wife Sarah are found on the roll of members of the Tar River Baptist Church.
In 1773 Jeremiah sold his land to his son Philip Lewis. At this time Jeremiah and the rest of his family moved south to Anson Co. NC, leaving son Philip and his wife behind, near her parents.
