About Sarah "Sally" Madden
The Harpes lived only about four miles from the John Rice home. It is said that Sally Rice was a beautiful frail blonde girl less than 20 years of age when Willie Harpe charmed her into marrying him. The father, Preacher John Rice, apparently was also deceived by this smooth-talking neighbor boy, and performed the wedding ceremony on Oct. 5, 1797, according to Knox County TN Marriage Records.
