About Sarah Rutledge

Her husband Gov. John Mathews was married twice. In 1766 he married Mary Wragg.

After her death, in 1799 he married Sarah Rutledge, the sister of John and Edward Rutledge.

John Rutledge: Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States and also its second Chief Justice. Additionally, he served as the first President of South Carolina and, later, its first Governor after the Declaration of Independence. His sister Elizabeth Mathews was the wife of Thomas Heyward, Jr. signatory of the United States Declaration of Independence
