About Sarah Ann Orton

Sarah T. Orton Passes; Funeral Held Sunday [9 Jul 1939]

Sarah T. Orton, 74, wife of Samuel T. Orton and a respected resident of this community, passed away at the family home here last Friday evening at 9:45. Although she had only been bedfast for a little more than a week, she had been in very poor health for many years and in her weakened condition was unable to recover from her illness. She has had other serious illnesses but has rallied each time to recover and be able to do her work about the home but this time she continued to get weaker from the beginning and passed away at the time above stated.

Sarah Ann Taylor Orton was born at American Fork on April 29, 1865, a daughter of Thomas and Sarah Ann Chadburn Taylor. The Taylor family moved to Parowan to live when Mrs. Orton was only two or three years old and this has been her home ever since. She was married to Samuel T. Orton here on August 6, 1883* [see note below] by Bishop Charles Adams and to them six children were born, five of whom survive her. She was a faithful member of the LDS church all her life but her health precluded her from taking an active part in church organizations during her later years although she never missed an opportunity to help from her home.

She is survived by her husband, four sons, Oscar, Lorin and Claude Orton of Parowan and Arnold Orton of Enterprise, one daughter, Beatrice Thorley of Cedar City, all of whom were at the bedside when the end came. She is also survived by four brothers Henry and John Taylor of this city, Wesley Taylor of Thatcher, Arizona and J.A. Taylor of Bountiful, and one sister, Mrs. Lenora T. Walker of Cedar City, also by twenty one grandchildren.
