William Pixley's Wives? His first wife Sarah Lawrence Pixley died Dec. 25, 1713. Some sources: (Judd, Forbes Library,Northampton, Mass.) say he had a second wife Mary who may have been the daughter of Jonathan Hillyard. In Book 1 pg 261 of the Hampshire County Probate Records 1660-1780 is recorded the inventory of William Pixley's estate-filed 30 Mar 1690-which includes the court granting administrative power to his eldest son Thomas Pixleyand Mary Pixley "Widdow or Relict to sd Wm Pixley. PROBLEM: Sarah Lawrence, the mother of his children, didn't die until 1713. She outlived William Pixley, so what happened to her? She was still alive when William died and his "widow Mary" is mentioned in the inventory of his estate. This is a puzzle! What is the answer?

Sarah Lee Pixley was born on March 4, 1643 in Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay, British Colonial America, Hingham, Plymouth County, MA, United States. Her parents were Maj. Thomas Lawrence, of Hingham and Elizabeth Lawrence (Bates).
Sarah married William Pixley, Sr., on November 24, 1663 in Hadley, Hampshire County, Massachusetts. Together they had the following children: Sarah Lee; Thomas Pixley; William Lawrence Pixlee, II; Joseph Lawrence Pixley, (A); Joseph Lawrence Pixley, Sr; Ebenezer Pixley; Anthony Pixley; Mary Pixley.
She died on December 25, 1713 in Westfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts and was buried in 1713.

I believe it is probable that Sarah Lawrence, daughter of Thomas of Hingham and Sarah Lawrence, wife of William Pixley of Hadley were not the same person. There was a Sarah born in Hingham in 1644. The record of baptism does not name the parents,[1] but a History of Hingham states that Thomas had a daughter Sarah born at that time.[2] However what is the basis for identifying her with the Sarah who married William Pixley? The communities of Hingham/Boston and Hadley/Springfield were not closely associated, the latter being principally settled by colonists from Connecticut. How would a Lawrence-Pixley connection have occurred? How would a daughter of Thomas come to be in Hadley? The family of Thomas by all accounts remained in the Boston area. At that time a young woman striking out on her own to a remote settlement would have been unheard of. The balance of probabilities suggests that there were two (in fact there were certainly more) Sarah Lawrences.
