Memorable Manitobans: Sarah Schiller “Sally” Gotlieb (1899-1998)

Zionist leader.

Probably born in Skala, Galicia, she emigrated with her parents to Philadelphia. She moved to Winnipeg as a child and graduated from St. John’s High School. On 24 December 1922, she married David Philip Gotlieb at Winnipeg and they subsequently had two children: Allan E. Gotlieb (b 1928) and Eunice Gotlieb. She was active in the Ezra Chapter of Hadassah, was elected its President in 1922, and in 1932 became President of the Winnipeg Hadassah Council. In 1934 she was voted Western Vice-President of Hadassah, and she served until 1951. During the Second World War she was Chair of Hadassah Youth Aliyah and was known locally as “the woman who led everything.” From 1951 to 1955 she served as National President of Canadian Hadassah. She was also active in the Women’s International Zionist Organization (WIZO) and was its first representative to UNESCO. She declined the Presidency of World WIZO because her husband refused to leave Winnipeg. She died at Winnipeg on 1 November 1998.
