v. Sarah (Sally) Seavy (#21885) was born Kennebunkport, York, ME 1762.(157) She married twice. She married Ambrose Curtis in Harpswell, Cumberland, ME, 17 Dec 1789.(158) Bradbury says "Mr. Curtis" - m by Rev Samuel Eaton (Ambrose Curtis is #22286.)

Ambrose died by 29 Jan 1807.(159) Ambrose was listed as the head of a family on the 1790 Census in Harpswell, Cumberland, ME.(160) In the 1790 census, "Ambros Curtes" is listed as the head of a family in Harpswell consisting of one male aged 16 years and above, one female, and one male under the age of 16 Abstract from The Maine Genealogist, Vol. 21, No. 3, (Aug 1999), pp 112-113:

In the 1790 census, "Ambros Curtes" is listed as the head of a family in Harpswell consisting of one male aged 16 years and above, one female, and one male under the age of 16. This fits with Theodore being their only child at that time (b 1790). But there are no records of any children being born to this couple in Harpswell; indeed, there are no furhter references to any Ambrose or Sarah Curtis in the Harpswell records of this period. Also, there is no other Ambrose Curtis listed as head-of-household in Freeport or in any of the towns in Maine's 1790 census (or in MA, VT, or NH).

There is no Ambrose Curtis listed in Harpswell, Freeport, or anywehre else in Maine in the 1800 census. However, in its issue of 29 Jan 1807, Portland's Eastern Argus newspaper reported that Sally Curtis had been appointed administratrix over the estate of Ambrose Curtis, late of Freeport, mariner. In the 1800 census, Sarah Curtis appears for the first time as a head-of-household in Maine. If she is in fact the wife of Ambrose Curtis, it is possible that Ambrose was then at sea, explaining why he is not found in the 1800 census. However, if Ambrose was lost at sea at the end of 1799 or in January 1800, there is an explanation for why Sally was not issued letters of administration until Jan 1807. MA followed the English common law which required a seven-year waiting period before a missing person was presumed dead (MA Civ. Stat. Chap 200 para 13; ME Civ Stat. Title 18-A para 1-107). Thus, Ambrose's wife could not have been appointed administratrix or have remarried before then.

In 1800, the family of Sarah Curtis is listed with two males under 10, one male 10-16, two females under 10, one female 10-16, and one female 26-45. This fits the Ambrose Curtis family except there is an extra girl between 10 and 16 years old. Sarah is not listed in the 1810 Maine census, nor in that of any nearby state. She may have died before the 1810 census, remarried, or moved in with one of her children. The census records therefore suggest that Ambrose and Sarah still resided in Harpswell at the time Theodore was born (even though his birth and those of his siblings are recorded in Freeport) and that they removed to Freeport before the 1800 census was taken.

She married John Townsend in Freeport, York, ME, 12 Feb 1807.(161) Bradbury says "Mr. Townsend"; borne out by the marriage in Freeport on 12 Feb 1807 of Sally Curtis and John Townsend - on their marriage intentions, entered 12 Jan 1807, Sally was called "Mrs." Sally Curtis. (John Townsend is #22287.)

John was born 9 Jun 1766 in Abington, Plymouth, MA.(162) John died 7 Nov 1830 in Freeport, York, ME, at 64 years of age.(163)

vi. Eunice (Lois) Seavy (#21886) was born Kennebunkport, York, ME 1766.(164) Bradbury calls her Lois; however, marriage records at church say she is Eunice Eunice died 18 Apr 1844 in Harpswell, Cumberland, ME, at 77 years of age.(165) She married twice. She married Ambrose Curtis.(166) (Ambrose Curtis is #22285.) She married Benjamin Curtis in Arundel, York, ME, 15 Feb 1787.(167) Church of Christ nka First Congregational

Harpswell TR says 9 children born to Benjamin and Lois Curtis between 1 Nov 1787 and 19 Apr 1806 (Benjamin Curtis is #21887.)

Benjamin was born 18 Oct 1764 in Harpswell, Cumberland, ME.(168) Benjamin was the son of Caleb Curtis and Mercy Lowe. Benjamin died 3 Dec 1830 in Harpswell, Cumberland, ME, at 66 years of age.
