About Seaborn "Seab" Hudson Daniel

http://39thgavolinfrgt.homestead.com/39thHomepage.html

1LT Seaborn H. Daniel. Company D, 39th Georgia. This tintype was taken in the early part of the war. Seaborn originally joined Company A, 19th Tennesee Volunteer Infantry Regiment in the early part of the war and joined the 39th Georgia shortly after its formation. Seaborn's father; Frank, and his four cousins were all in Company D. Seaborn's father was one of the original Lieutenants of Company H, 21st Georgia Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Seaborn was born on 5 January 1842 and was elected as the Junior 2nd Lieutenant of Company D on 29 November 1862. He served several substantial periods of time as the company commander and was mentioned by Colonel James Cooper Nisbet in his book "Four Years on the Firing Line" as a very brave officer in his leadership of the company at Missionary Ridge. He was wounded at least once and admitted to the Way Hospital in Meridan, Mississippi on 23 January 1865 after the retreat from Tennessee after Hood's disasterous operations in the Tennessee Campaign of 1864. Seaborn died on 31 October 1936 in Gadsden, Alabama. He is one of the webmaster's ancestors and I am proud of him. The tintype is courtesy of my cousins Roger Daniel and Carolyn Wooten. Thanks a million!!

Hi!

I've found out quite a bit of information about Seaburn since I posted the query.

My GGG Granfather Seaborn Hudson Daniel (I've seen it spelled Seaborn and Seaborne) was born January 5, 1942 in Dade County, Georgia and died October 31, 1936 in Gadsden, Alabama. He married Martha Victoria Lowe. They had eight children. They were:

1. James Seaborn Daniel

2. Minnie Lee Daniel (Whorton)

3. Hettie Enomia Daniel (McCarver)

4. George R. Runnels Daniel (or George B Runnels Daniel)

5. Mary Elizabeth Daniel (Yaikow)

6. Laney Adell Daniel

7. John Calvin Webb Daniel

8. Maude Lavernia Daniel (Amberson)

Seaborne's father's name was Francis, and he was the sheriff of Dade County for a time. Both were officers in the Company D, 39th Georgia Infantry Regiment. Francis had some service in another regiment prior to his service with the 39th Georgia. There is a lot of information on them during the War Between the States, but there's not much about them post-war. I do have some information on Seaborne from the Gadsden newspaper post-war. Four of Frank's nephews served in Company D too. Seaborne is mentioned in a book entitled "Four Years on the Firing Line" by James Cooper Nisbet, who was also from Dade County. He was described by Nisbet as "a very brave officer."

Seaborn's son George B. Runnels Daniel is my GG-Grandfather. GEORGE B. RUNNELS DANIEL was born July 7, 1871, and died October 14, 1946 in Gadsden, Etowah County, Albama. He married (1)DORA RHODES. She died September 1904. He married (2)EULA J. MCCULLER. She was born 1874 and died 1952.

More About GEORGE B. RUNNELS DANIEL:

Burial: October 1946, Pilgrims Rest Cemetery in Southside, Etowah County, Alabama

More About DORA RHODES:

Burial: September 1904, Pilgrims Rest Cemetery in Southside, Etowah County, Alabma.

Children of GEORGE DANIEL:

I. BEN DANIEL, b. July 13, 1890

II. SEAB DANIEL, b. October 7, 1892

III. HATTIE DANIEL, married ? MOON

IV. LUDIE DANIEL, married ? HILL

V. ART DANIEL

VI. MILTON DANIEL, married IRENE ANDERSON

VII. BIDDIE DANIEL, married ? BREEDEN

VIII. ZADY DANIEL, married ? YOUNG

IX. LEE DANIEL, married JOHN BRIGHT

Notes for George R. Runnels Daniel’s children:

Two of Seaborn and Martha's grandsons they reared were Ben Daniel (born July 13, 1890) and Seab Daniel (born October 7, 1892). These were George's illigitimate children from before he married Dora. Dora is my GG-Grandmother. George's second wife, Eula, was good to all of his children. My grandmother and great-grandmother just loved her.

A Daniel family relative has compiled a good bit of information on the 39th Georgia Infantry. You can see his website at:

Thanks for the info! You're Seaborn is probably a relative of my Seaborn! It seems to be a common name in the Daniel family. I can't find any information past Seaborn's dad, Francis. He could be one of Eli's children. I know Seaborn had a cousin Jobe. Francis had brother named Asa. Asa's son, Milligan Chester Daniel, fought with Seaborn in the 39th GA infantry. I've also heard a rumor that the brothers Asa and Francis were 1st cousins to Jasper Newton Daniel (JACK) of whiskey fame.

If this looks like it could be a part of Seaborn John Daniel and Eli Daniel's family, let me know! In the meantime, I'll check out what I can about them.

Thanks!

He was an officer in Company D, 39th Georgia Infantry during the War Between the States. someone on ancestry.com has this "" I have his Compiled Service Records and there is no known pension file on him. "" He is buried at Smith Cemetary, Pollards Bend, Cherokee County Alabama.I don't have this info at my fingertips this instance, but I believe this Seaborn(e) Daniel was a nephew of my grgrgrandfather, Seaborn John Daniel, b. GA. prox 1819. Some of the family went to Alabama. The name was sometimes spelled erroniously as "Sebron" or "Seborn" on censuses, etc.,but was a name passed around in the Daniel family (NC, GA, AL).Please contact me directly at e-mail address above and I will lead you to it on Ancestry.com, or copy it and mail it to you.MR DANIEL AND HIS WIFE WERE IN COOSA VALLEY NURSING HOME IN EAST GADSDEN IN THE EARLY 60'S THERESA

I'm just wondering, what are the stories about Elizabeth Calaway? I've just recently found out she's my GGGGGG-Grandmother, and I don't know anything about her. (My GGGGG-Grandfather is William Daniel, GGGG-Grandfather is Francis Daniel, GGG-Grandfather is Seaborn Hudson Daniel, GG-Grandfather is George Runnels Daniel, G-Gransmother is Lee Daniel Bright, Grandmother is Patricia Bright Madderra, and mother is Anita Madderra Shea.)Could someone please clue me in on the story/rumor/legend you're talking about?

Thanks!

moria580@aol.com lookiing for infoI think that Seaborn Daniel was listed in the Dade County, GA 1860 census as Sedron H. born in 1842 to Francis and Lydia(Long) Daniel. In "The Civil War Comes to Dade County" S.H. Daniel was listed as a 1 Lt. in the 39th Georgia Volunteer Infantry - Army of TN, CSA - "Dade County Invincibles"

His father Frances is also listed as a 1 Lt. and 4 cousins(one being my GGGrandfather) as privates in the same unit.

They all fought and were captured at Vicksburg on July 4, 1863 and went on to fight at Chattanooga, Atlanta and finnally surrendered at Betonville, NC.

In the 1910 Calhoun Co., AL census, Seab H. Daniel age 68 lists Benjamin & Seab (Seaborn) Jr ages 16 & 14 as grandsons. I did find both boys in the 1900 census (Benjamin was listed as Hiram B.) living as boarders with the family of William Harris in Etowah Co., AL. Do you know who this Seaborn Jr.'s father might have been? Ancestry has George as the father, but since he isn't any where near the Williams family in 1900, I don't think this is right. Hope you can help.

Captain in the Confederate Army, Enlisted as a private in Company A, 19th Tennessee Regiment, and filed for pension in 1921 in Etowah County, AL. Was also in the 39th Georgia Infantry.Photo is Jess, James Skelton, J.B. and Seaborn, H., taken in 1922 in Grapevine when Seab visited.
