Last child and son of Sarah Josephine Mallory and John Nelson Whitaker. His mother died of typhoid fever when he was eight months old. When he was about 9 years old, his father married a second time to Elizabeth Catherine Taylor, widow of Alexander David Ross.

Secyl married Hortence Groo 1 December 1923 at Paris, Bear Lake, Idaho.
