Selma Jalbert

Selma was the adopted child of Jacob and Bertha Swenson Walters. She went to school in the Gardner area and was confirmed in the Nora Luthern Church. After marriage William and Selma homesteaded in the Regent area. There they farmed and had 11 children.

Her given name was Baglien (Possibly a twin sister to Jerome Baglien. A relative told me that she thought Minnie Baglien and Selmas voices sounded very much alike. I checked birth dates of Minnies siblings and Jerome was born same year, same month as Selma.)(A cousin Delores Carlson said that when she was a little girl she wondered where Selma came from. Jacob told her someone on a train handed her to me.)

1909 March 24 at one month shy of 15 was given permission by her guardian, Jacob Walters to marry William James Jalbert. They were married by a county judge, in Fargo North Dakota (licence attached). 1915 Census. Living in North Dakota with husband, William, daughter Bernice and son Leslie Jerome. 1925 - Census. Living in North Dakota. In the household was Father Wm age 35, Mother Selma age 32 and their 8 children ranging from age 2 to 13.

1930 Census, Kennedy, Hettinger, North Dakota. Father William was a farmer at 46 years old, Mother Selma was 36. Daughter Beraneece was a school teacher at 18, Leslie was 16, Glen 14, Charlotte 13, Wayne 11, Earline 10, Marvel 8, Russell 7, Denis 3 mos. All the children were born in North Dakota. 1940 Census Kennedy, Hettinger, North Dakota. William was a farmer at the age of 55, Selma was 46 and spittin' out kids every year or so. Glen was a farmer at age 24, Charlotte was a maid in the school dorm at age 23, Earlene was 20, Marvel 18, Russell 17, Denis 10, Archie 7 and Joyce 5.
