About Sergeant Rodman Taber Greene
Rodman T. Greene, Sgt., Ass't Squad Leader 2nd Rifle Squad, 1st Platoon, Co.L, 3rd Bn., 414th Regt., 104th "Timberwolves" Infantry Div. Shipped overseas to France in Sept 1944, assigned to Montgomery's push into Belgium in October near James River. Div. reassigned to The First US Army, to replace the !st Division "Big Red" on the lines at Aachen (Stolberg, Ger.) on the West Wall. Made the "Big Push" 16 Nov '44.. Was wounded in Weisweiler, Germany the day after Thanksgiving by a machine gun( shattered his knee). He crawled into a cellar which became taken by the Germans overnight. He was liberated by the Americans who retook that house the next day , 26th Nov '44. Sent to hospital in Cambridge, England awaiting removal of leg. Died 13 Dec '44 from a heart embolism suspected to be caused by bone chip fragments. Buried in Cambridge, returned to Westerly, RI in 1945 for burial. Moved again to Hopkinton Cemetery around 1948.
He was a gifted artist with a promising career when the war took him. While awaiting surgery in England he wrote home that he was looking forward to getting back , even without a leg, and resume his career in art.
