The State of Alabama, Walker County, before me, James W. Shepherd,JudgeofProbate appeared R. T. Knight, City Recorder of the CityofJasper,Alabama, Samuel Snoddy, County Registrar of Walker County, andJ.D.Rutledge, of Jasper, Alabama, John M. Nelson of Patton, Alabama,eachofwhom being separately sworn deposes and separately says; Iampersonallyacquainted with A. J. Nelson. The affiant John M. Nelson isason of A.J. Nelson. I was enlisted in the Confederate service inCompany"B", 10thAlabama Cavalry on or about the 3rd day of August 1863 inWalkerCounty,Alabama. Our Captain was D. H. Whatley. Our company wentfromWalkerCounty, Alabama to Moulton, Alabama and was mustered intotheRegularservice as Company "B" 10th, Alabama Cavalry, C.S.A. inOctoberorNovember 1863. The Colonel of our Regiment was Richard O.Pickett.OurLt. Colonel was Robert Powell. Our Quarter Master was JohnAllen.OurRegiment went from Moulton to Dalton, Georgia and joinedtheArmycommanded at that time by Colonel Joseph E. Johnson. In May1864,ourRegiment was ordered to North Alabama to repel GeneralLong'sFederalCavalry raid. We went from there to Tishamingo Creek, orBrice'sCrossRoads, where we whipped fifteen thousand Yankees with fivethousandmen.General Forrest was in command. General B. D. Roddy wasourBrigadierGeneral. A few days later we engaged General Smith's armyanddrove himback to Atlanta and engaged in a battle at Newnam, Georgia.Fromthen onwe continued actively in the service until the surrender. Weandeach ofus have absolute personal knowledge that the said A. J.Nelsonwascontinuously in service from the time of his enlistment untilhewasparoled near Montgomery, in April 1885, and that he neverdesertedortook the oath of allegiance to the United States until afterhisparole.Added handwritten note; In February 1865, our companywastransferred to5th Alabama Cavalry commanded by Josiah Patterson.
