About Sgt. John Munson

  • The Tuttle story is one of my qualifying stories for Rootsweb's International Black Sheep Society
  • After checking out the citations that people sent me, as much as I could get ahold of them, mostly TAG, and a couple of citations, I never did get ahold of the Prindle book, I found that documents such as wills establish that the Tuttles were of Northampton. My sources, as well as a summary of the disproven roots cited in older Tuttle genealogies in the United States, are below.
  • Ringstead Tuttles
  • This is the true Tuttle lineage. The material is a little confusing.
  • Here is the version I put together;

THE MUNSON RECORD BY MYRON A. MUNSON P. 568-577.

According to information obtained by Myron A. Munson, Sergeant John Munson owned little land, his father conducted gristmills, and a liberal collection of cooper's tools belonged to his estate, combine to suggest that he was a cooper. His wife united with the First Church in New Haven between 1716 and 1718 under the ministr of Rev. Joseph Noyes. He was a participant in King George's War as it was known in America. In Europe, the war was known as The War of Austrian Succession. Four Thousand Massachusetts (3250) and New Hampshire(304) farmers, mechanics and fishermen set forth from New England in April 1745, to capture Louisbourg on the Island of Capt Breton, as it was the strongest fortress in North America. A daring night assault on May 26, resulted in sixty New Englanders killed with 116 taken prisoner. The French governor was disheartened, however, by the capture of the ship "Vigilant" which was equipped with 64 guns and laden with military stores. He was also alarmed by the erection of a battery on the lighthouse cliff and sent out a flag of truce. On June 17 the fortress surrendered. This was a chief victory of King George's War in America. Sometime during the expedition, Sergeant John Munson perished.
