Town records of Hampton, New Hampshire refer to Jonathan as Sergeant Moulton.

He married Sarah Dow on 13 May 1755. The moved to Scarborough, Maine in April 1755 where he settled on a large farm near Scarborough Corner which was passed down in the family for many generations. He operated a tannery and was commonly known by his middle name of Hampton.
