About Sgt. Sidney Allan Schwartz
- During the first week of September 1949, Sidney disappeared for three days in the Soviet Zone of Germany. The 24-year-old ex-Army sergeant and graduate of New York University was bicycling at the Linz-Urfahr Danube Bridge when he crossed the river---in spite of being warned by a clerk at the Linzerhof Hotel that the Emms Bridge was the only officially sanctioned crossing point. Sidney had no idea about the international stir that he caused by entering the Russian zone without authorization. Sidney spoke fluent Russian and was able to converse with the Russians whom he encountered. Sidney was on a 3,000-mile cycling tour of Europe when he crossed the East-West line. He was using a "gray pass," made out in Switzerland, which allowed a person to travel anywhere in the Soviet Zone. [Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, Friday, September 9, 1949, page 20; Brooklyn Eagle, Friday, September 9, 1949, pages 1 and 11]
- Sidney was a veteran of World War Two.
- From David Sperling: "According to [his] daughter Beatrice, Sidney began his own business originally, called Mantis Man, which sold Praying Mantis,’ as gardening aid for pest control and other gardening implements. The family didn’t like business as a profession, so Sydney got a PHD from NYU in physiology. Worked eventually for Grumman Company on work related to the lunar module and astronauts’ physiology. In 1957, international science year, he was working for the Navy as a physiologist and was sent to Antarctica along with other international teams, to do scientific studies. He met Sir Edmond Hillary. He wrote many letters with stories of being an explorer there in Antarctica. He ended up becoming an administrative judge for the State of New York, the Dept. of Environmental conservation, as there was a push to draft scientist who knew nothing of law to fill these positions to deal with the detail of the cases, as opposed to attorneys who knew nothing of science." [E-mailed to Paul Alan Fine on 5 October 2019.]
