About Sgt. Walter Joseph Baskiville

MR. W. J. BASKIVILLE, HASTINGS. The many friends of Mr. Walter Joseph Baskiville, will regret to hear of his death on the 11th ult at Hastings (writes a correspondent). The deceased, who was 67 years of age, was born at Panmure, Auckland. He joined the armed constabulary and served in the Maori War, and later entered the Police Force. He was stationed at Wellington, Port Ahuriri, and Waipukurau, and was then promoted to Sergeant and stationed in Dunedin and Devonport, retiring on superannuation after 30 years of loyal service. On his retirement he came to the Hastings district where some of his family lived. He is survived by his widow and three daughters (Mrs. W. F. Wellwood, Mrs. E. J. Halbert, and Miss Gladys Baskiville), and two sons (Messrs. Jack and Joseph Baskiville) all of this district. The late Mr. Baskiville was a kindly, straight-forward, and genial man who always looked for the good in his fellows. A good Catholic, a staunch Irishman, and a loyal friend were his outstanding characteristics, and although he had reached an advanced age his sudden death cast a gloom over a host of friends who had hoped to enjoy the felicity of his acquaintance for many more years. A Requiem. Mass was celebrated on Wednesday, the 13th ult., and the funeral, which took place in the afternoon, was very largely attended and representative of all classes of the community.—R.l.P, , WI am ready to die for the Lord; may my blood give the Church liberty and peace.—St. Thomas a Becket.
