About Shirley Gibbs
SHIRLEY O'NEILL GIBBS Shirley O'Neill Gibbs, of Vero Beach, Florida passed away on September 13, 2007. She and her late husband Perry J. Gibbs moved to Vero Beach from the Wilson Point section of Norwalk, Connecticut in 1974. The daughter of the late Ronald S. and Marice Casey O'Neill, Mrs. Gibbs was born in Mishawaka, Indiana on September 8, 1919. In addition to her husband Perry Gibbs, husbands Robert Fitzsimmons, William H. Callender and Neil R. Sheeley predeceased Mrs.Gibbs. Prior to marriage, Mrs. Gibbs was society editor for "The South Bend Tribune" in Indiana. She was a tireless volunteer for the American Cancer Society in Norwalk where she drove home bound patients to doctor's appointments and annually headed-up the "Neighbor to Neighbor" local cancer society's fundraising appeal on Wilson Point. Prior to her resignation in 2005 she was a charter member of the Country Club of Darien. At the time of her death, Mrs. Gibbs was a member of the Vero Beach Country Club, the Vero Beach Yacht Club, IRMC's Hospital Auxiliary, and the Holy Cross Women's Guild. Her children Margaret Anne Gibbs of Vero Beach, Michael W. Gibbs of Fort Myers, Florida, Lawrence B. Gibbs of Chevy Chase, Maryland, Perry J. Gibbs, III of Tucson, Arizona, 10 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, survive. Brothers William R. O'Neill, John P. O'Neill and a sister Marice O'Neill Butler, predeceased her. A mass of Christian burial will take place at Holy Cross Catholic Church on Wednesday, September 19th at 10:00 am. Internment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Indian River Medical Center, 1000 36th Street, Vero Beach, FL 32960.
