About Sidney Bracher Campbell

Sid spent his entire life in Jonesborough. He spent his early years living on his father William's farm with his mother Sarah Jane and her sister Catharine Crumley (who never married). Catherine remained in the household even after her sister Sarah's death in 1897, when Sid was just 20 years old.

On New Year's Day 1899, Sid Campbell married his first wife, Elizabeth Viola "Vida" Morrell in Washington County, Tennessee. They had three children – Sarah Alva (1900-1989), Samuel Rollin "Dock" (1901-1959) & Albert Leland "Fat" Campbell (1903-1973), all born in Jonesborough.

Just four months after the birth of Albert Leland, Sid became a widow when his wife Vida died on September 30th, 1903 from scarlet fever. She was just 27 years old at the time of her passing. Sidney & his children remained on his father's farm and appears to have inherited it when William Campbell died in 1918. His children were still living with him on the farm in Jonesborough as of January 1920.

Later that year, Sid married his 2nd wife – Roxie Pearl Smith (1889-1983). They were living on the farm with Sid's daughter Sarah as of 1930. (Roxie later married someone with the surname Donahue. Sarah married Alvin Painter.)

On December 11th, 1936, Sidney was struck by a hit-and-run drive in Johnson City, TN. According to his obituary, "a careless, cowardly driver ran against him from his car, severing every muscle and crushing his legs, only to speed on and leave him helpless." Six days later, Sidney succumbed from his injuries.

He was buried at Fairview United Methodist Cemetery, a place that he has given his own special attention and where his own ancestors are buried.

"He was very much interested in the upkeep and improvement of the Fairview cemetery, and only a few years ago, through his help and soliciting funds, a new road was made and drive-ways added and rocked, and since he is sleeping there the cemetery is just a little nearer and dearer to us."

"Another unique habit found in him was each year at the annual decoration he carried an extra box of flowers and went from grave to grave, not allowing one to be missed; if it was only a single rose, he dropped it on, whether he knew whose grave it was or not."
