About Sidney Israel Karesky
Ran away from home at age 16, hopped a train all the way to San Francisco and got a job as a busboy at St. Francis Drake Hotel where he worked for 6 months before they caught up with him and send him back to Boston. Joined the army at age 19 in 1940. Became a paratrooper. Commisioned as 2nd Lt. in 1942. Saw action in North Africa and Italy, met the Pope in Rome in 1944 before being sent to Belgium where he was attached to an armored unit that was stationed right at the point of the German offensive in the "Battle of the Bulge." He was severley wounded, awarded Purple Heart, classified with permanent disabilities (nerve damage) and retired as First Lt. He married Sadye Goldberg on Jan. 17th, 1946. Had two sons, Edward Charles, Sept. 26, 1947, and Raymond Alan, Feb. 12, 1949, and a daughter who did not survive birth, Baby Girl Karesky 1953.
