He was born in House No. 12 on 18 Aug 1832, the son of Baruch Schreiber and his wife, Elka [Ester] (Schreiber) Schreiber. He was named Josua at birth, in honor of his maternal great-grandfather, Josua [Schaja] Schreiber (1768-1831). He is still seen as Josua when the 1857 census was taken, but was later known as "Sigmund Schreiber". Much later in life, he was "Sigismondo Sofer".

In 1857, he was living with his mother, stepfather [Moses Steiner], and his Steiner half-siblings in House No. 7: Prossnitz, 1857 -- House No. 7: STEINER, Moses, b. 1813, wife Elka, b. 1810, sons Salomon, b. 21 Sep 1842, Max, b. 1851, and David, b. 1851, daughter Amalia, b. 1852, and stepson, SCHREIBER, Josua, b. 1832.
