About Silas Carman

Silas5 Carman (Caleb4, Caleb3, John2, John1) was born 14 March 1707/08 at Hempstead Township, Queens County, New York. He died 12 March 1784 in Oyster Bay Township, Queens County, New York. He married 15 Jun 1736 at St George's Church in Hempstead, Miss Hannah Smith, born 12 February 1717/18 at Hempstead, Queens, New York, and died 13 January 1797; granddaughter of Timothy Treadwell.

"In 1739 he recorded his stock mark on the town books of Hempstead, consisting of a swallowfork in the right ear, a halfpenny the foreside of the left year & a crop of the left ear (HTR 3:169) In 1763 he was a landholder on both sides of the Oyster Bay - Hempstead line; a neighbor, on the Hempstead side was a John Carman (No.62?) (HTR 4:495). In 1771 he owned Hempstead land (HTR 3:169). He or his son was doubtless the Silas Carman who signed the 'Articles of Association' in 1776, in Suffolk County, L.I. (REV.PAP.1:52). However, in Oct. 1776, after the British were in control of Long Island, a Silas Carman (or son, not necessarily the same man who signed the articles) declared his loyalty to King George III (Onkerdonk's "Rev. Incidents of Queens Co., L.I., p.118 ff)." -"John-1 Carman of Hempstead, Long Island and Some of his Descendants Thru His Son John-2", Henry Alanson Tredwell, Jr, August 1946, Collection of the NYGBS, New York City.

"Oisterbay April 24, 1755, listed as owning one male slave; "Census of Slaves 1755 by order of the Lieutenant Governor - 'Documentary History of New York', O'Callaghan, 1849, volume III, chapter XI, page 864.

There is such an age gap between Silas and his son Silas that it would seem that there is a generation missing, but Tredwell Fleet Carman confirms that there is not and names this Silas as his Grandfather and Hannah as his Grandmother, and as he, unsolicited, mentions Timothy Tredwell as his mother's grandfather, this is probably his namesake.
