Born Simon Kleinman on 10/10/1878 reportedly in Kelme Lithuania (although he lists Kouvnas on his draft card). He was the youngest child or Benjamin and Dvora. Simon immigrated to NY in 1895. Took Harry Ackerman's last name to avoid confusion at Ellis Island, as Simon came in as Harry's brother. They shared the same mother..Dvora? but had different fathers. Fannie and Sarah were full sisters. It's unclear whether or not Sarah was a half sister, although she share Dvora? as her mother .Census shows birthdate Dec 1878 and immigration as 1895. Per Gertrude: As a child, he was sent to study with the Rabbi. The Museum of the Jewish People website says: In 1881 the Slobodka Yeshiva was founded in a suburb of Kaunas, becoming the first and most typical yeshiva of the morals school. Later on additional moralist yeshivas were founded in Lithuania, among them those in the towns of Novardok (Nowogrodek) and Kelme.
He was 21 and lived at 93 Canal St on the lower east side/Chinatown. This was Harry's address per 1900 census. Per 1900 census, after he got married, Simon lived on Eldridge St. Per 1910 Census, Simon lived at 49 Canal St. In 1930, he lived at 1643 43rd St., Brooklyn. They had 4 children before Rosie died of post childbirth kidney complications (reported as eclampsia). Louey Krones had a cousin, May. He married her to care for his children, promising not to have relations for a year so that she could leave if she wasn't happy. He married the year after Rosie died and they had Myron. Simon flew in prop plane into then Palestine and purchased land from the Arabs. He purchased a good part of land near Haifa, and offered it to Raymond to live. Raymond declined and Simon gave it to JNF. There is a 50,000 acre forest in his honor was planted in recognition of this gift. On several of these trips, he returned home w stated US born Ackerman women, whose names are yet to be identified. WWII registration states he was born in Kaunas (Kovno), Lithuania. Kaunas is the name of a town as well as a province (in which the town Kaunas is located). Memel is also in Kaunas province. c 1900 Gargzdai (Gordzh) and Kelme were part of the Russian Empire in Kovno province. Source: JewishGen Aunt Dorothy Thorn's memoir - Title:"Remembrances" Memoir of Fannie and Harry Schlenger by their daughter, Dorothy. Fannie and Simon Kleinman were born to Dvera Kleinman in Memel (Klaipeda, Lithuania). This was Dvera's 2nd marriage. Fannie and Simon changed their names to Ackerman when they came to the US since their half-brother Harry Ackerman (from Dvera's first marriage) had paid for their passage and so as not to confuse the customs officers that they were Harry's siblings.
