Dr. Simon Newcomb Whitney, an economist, author and professor emeritus of economics at New York University, died Thursday at his home in Scarsdale, Westchester County, New York. He was 78 years old.
Simon Whitney graduated from Deep Springs College in 1919 and served as Dean/Director of Deep Springs College from 1942-1949. He graduated from Yale College in 1925 and received a doctorate in economics from Yale in 1931.
He joined New York University in 1948, and was named professor emeritus in 1971. He also taught at Deep Springs College in California, Howard University, Rutgers University, Barnard College and Iona College.
He was chief economist and director of the Bureau of Economics at the Federal Trade Commission from 1956-1961, and also was an economist with the Federal Administration of Export Control.
Three sons, Dr. Simon Newcomb Whitney Jr. Roger Sherman Whitney and Walter McIntosh Whitney, both of New York City; and a daughter, Eunice E. Andrews (Whitney) of Falls Church, Virginia;
Among his books were Antitrust Policies, Trade Associations and Industrial Controls; A Critique of the N.R.A. and Economic Principles.
