Sir Adam Hepburn of Humbie was appointed clerk to the Committee of Estates, elected in June 1640nto oppose Charles I., and accompanied the Scottish army to Engand in the campaign of that year. He received the honour of knighthood on the 15th November 1641, and was at the same time appointed an Ordinary Lord by the King, with the consent of the Estates. He represented the county of Haddington in 1643 and the subsequent year of Charles I., and was on the 17th August 1643 appointed collector-general and treasurer to the army. After the cajpitultion of York in July 1644, he was despatched to the Parliament of England to represent to them the necessities of the army, and to press the settling of religion. He was a member of the various committees of the estates, — of war, etc. which were formed from time to time, and appears to have been among the most active and jealous of his party. In 1650 he attended Charles II. at Perth, and was one of a committee appointed to superintend the arrangements for his coronation. Along with many other members of the Committee of Estates be was surprised and taken prisoner by Colonel Aldriche and 500 horse at Alyth, in the county of Forfar, in August; 1651. The prisoners were stripped of all they had, carried to Broughty Castle, and from thence shipped for England, being first taken to Tynemouth castle, and afterwards to London. He died according to Nicol's Diary, in June 1656. Lamont, however, states his death to have happened only in December 1658. He brake the taylie and left his landes to his daughter, being only of the age of two years. Senators of the College of Justice: 311-2
