About Sir Alexander Home, 1st Baronet of Renton

Biographical Summary

"Sir Alexander Home, or Hume, Knt., of Renton, in the parish of Coldingham, co. Berwick, 1st s. and h. of Sir John Home, or Hume, of the same, sometime (1663-71) a Lord of Session and Lord Justice Clerk, by Margaret, da. of (whose issue became heir to) the Hon.. John Stewart, Commendator of Coldingham (2d s. of Francis, 1st Earl of Bothwell, [S.]), suc. his father in 1671, to whom, being then a Knight, he was served heir special in Northfields and Fewlls, and was cr. a Baronet [S.], as above, between 1672 and 1678, there being, however, no record of such creation in the Great Seal Register, and no date being assigned to it in Milne's List, where, however, it is noted that he "gets his arms as Barronet out of the Lyon office." He was served, 2 June 1690, heir. gen. of his father, and heir spec, in the Barony of Benton, the office of Forester, etc. He was, however, nearly ruined by his yr. br., Sir Patrick Home, 1st Baronet [S. 1697], of Lumsden, who (wrongfully) held from him the estate of Ronton, and whom, in 1685, he accused of forgery. He m. Agnes, or Margaret, da. of Sir William Scot, of Clerkington, from whom he was afterwards separated. He d. 28 May 1698."

The title became either extinct or dormant on the death of the fourth Baronet in 1738.
