About Sir Alexander de Jewbanke
8. ln the eighth generation of this family Sir Alexander Jewbanke, Knight, married the daughter of Sir Hugh Balioll of Barnard Castle, and they had one daughter who was their sole heir. The Balliols (the modern spelling) were an ancient and important family in the north-country and included Kings of Scotland. The arms of Sir Hugh are shown in the upper left corner of page 10. Barnard Castle was a market town in the Bishopric of Durham, and the closest Durham town to Brough and Appleby. Some early Ewbanks moved from Westmorland to 'Barney', as it is called'.
Flobert Lord Mpont sided with Simon de Montfort and Humphrey de Bohun against Edward III, and died of wounds received in the baronial wars shortly after the birth of his second daughter. s6 The link between the Viponts and Lady Anne Clifford, discussed in the previous chapter, was established when her ancestor Roger de Clifford married lsabella de Mpont in 1273. lsabella was one of the daughters of Robert de Vipont, and may have been the granddaughter of Sir Alexander Jewbanke. However, Flobert was married twice, previously to the daughter of Geotfrey Fitzpeter, Chief Justice of England, and lsabella de Vipont may have been the daughter of his first wife. 9. The unnamed daughter of Sir Alexander Jewbanke married Robert Lord Vipont. She was his second wife. Machell indicated that this marriage took place in the year 29 Henry 3 (29th year of reign of Henry III, or 12M-45), and that they had two daughters.
