Third son of John Cuming Beatty and Hetty Bull of New York. A mining engineer, who graduated from Columbia University, he was called "the King of Copper". A collector of Oriental art and literature, he also acquired a collection of ancient Egyptian biblical sh government and medical papyri.
He became a naturalised British citizen in 1933. Upset by the taxation policies of the post-war British government, he moved to Ireland in 1950, creating the Chester Beatty Library, which is now located within Dublin Castle.
Knighted by Britain in 1954 for his contribution to the strategic supplies in Wporld War II, he was made an honorary citizen of Ireland in 1957. He was given a state funeral by the Irish Government, the only private citizen to be given such an honor. His funeral took place on 29th January 1968 from St. Patrick's Cathedral.
His first wife, Grace Madeline Rickard, whom he married on 18 April 1900, died of typhoid fever in 1911. His second wife was Edith Dunne Stone, daughter of John Dunne of New York. They married on 21 June 1913. He became estranged from her, after he moved to Dublin. He was survived by a son, and pre-deceased by his wife and a daughter.
