Son and heir to Sir Henry Cromwell and Mary Paulet. Grandson of Sir Gregory Cromwell and Elizabeth Seymour, John Paulet, Marquess of Winchester and Elizabeth Willowby. Great grandson of Sir Thomas Cromwell of monastery dissolution fame.

Husband of Elizabeth Upton, daughter of William Upton of Puslinch, Devon, and Mary Kirkham, daughter of Thomas. They were married in 1581 and had one daughter, Elizabeth, who married Sir John Shelton and Thomas FitzHughes.

Secondly, her was the husband of Frances Rugge, daughter of William Rugge or Repps of Felmington and Thomasine Townsend, daughter of Sir Robert, Justice of Chester. They were married about 1593 and had one son and two daughters; Thomas, Lord Cromwell, Frances, the daughter of John Wingfield, and Anne, the wife of William Wingfield.

Sir Edward served in the expedition against Spain with Sir Robert Devereux, the Earl of Essex, who knighted Edward at Dublin 12 July 1599. Other records state he was knighted by Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, Queen Elizabeth's favorite. He then joined in the Earl of Essex's rebellion and was fined £3000 and imprisoned for months, but received a pardon from Queen Elizabeth in 02 July 1601. Sir Edward purchased the Barony of Lecale, County Down in 1606, and died in Ireland.
