About Sir Edward Penruddock, MP

http://www.historyofparliamentonline.org/volume/1558-1603/member/pe...

Penruddock’s father [Sir George Penruddock], a soldier in the service of the 1st Earl of Pembroke, purchased the reversion of a moiety of the manor of Compton Chamberlayne, and began to establish his family as country gentlemen. The son continued the process, purchasing the other half of the estates and receiving his father’s share by way of marriage settlement in 1575-6. It was presumably the 2nd Earl of Pembroke who obtained his seats at Weymouth and Wilton. The only certain reference found to him in the journals of the House is permission for him to depart, 16 Mar. 1587. In fact, little is known about any of his activities. He attended the Wiltshire quarter sessions at Devizes, Salisbury and Warminster; he and his second wife were defendants in a lawsuit in 1598 concerning a house in Clerkenwell, presumably the one he inherited from his father; Pembroke wrote in that year to thank Sir Robert Cecil for his ‘good furtherance’ of a request made on Penruddock’s behalf. He died 1 Feb. 1613, and administration of his estate was granted to his 4th but 1st surviving son John in March of that year.
