Lord Mayor of London.

  • 1552 Alderman Sir Thomas Leigh married the niece of Sir Rowland Hill (Lord Mayor 1549–50). From his eldest son the Lords Leigh of the present creation, and from his second those of the earlier creation were descended; his third son was grandfather of Sir Francis Leigh, created Earl of Chichester, through whom he was ancestor of Chatham and the younger Pitt. His daughter Winifred married Sir George Bond (Lord Mayor 1587–8) and was ancestress of the Dukes of Marlborough, Viscount Melbourne (the Premier) and the later Dukes of Leeds. First found in Somerset where they were seated from very early times and were granted lands by Duke William of Normandy, their liege Lord, for their distinguished assistance at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 A.D.

Sir George Bond (died 1592) was

  • a 16th-century English politician who served as Lord Mayor of London in 1587/8.[1]
  • A native of Somerset,
  • he was the younger son of William Bond of Buckland and younger brother of William Bond, alderman and Sheriff of London.[2]
  • He was a member of the Haberdasher's Company.[3]
  • Prior to becoming mayor, he was elected as Sheriff of London in 1579 and alderman of Walbrook in 1584.
  • At the time of his election in 1587, the usual Mayoral Feast was cancelled, on account of plague within the city of London.[4]
  • Sir George Bond married Winifred Leigh, the
    • daughter of another Lord Mayor, Sir Thomas Leigh.[5]
  • Among his children were Thomas Bond, MP for Launceston and Southampton,[6] and William Bond, alderman, whose grandson Thomas was the first of the Bond Baronets of Peckham.
  • He died in 1592[7] and was buried in the Mercers' Chapel.
  • After his death, his widow married John Colles of Barton Grange, Corfe, MP for Minehead.[8]
