  • (fn. 20) John de Annesley, 14 H. 6, granted to John Makworth, Dean of Lincolne, John Curson, Thomas Makworth, Esquire, and others, his Mannors of Annesley, Bulcote, and Gippesmere, and all his Lands and Tenements in Crophill and Cossale in this County, and in Rawemersh and Bolton upon Derne in the County of Yorke, which descended to him after the death of Thomas de Annesley his grandfather. The Jury, 18 H. 6, (fn. 21) found Alice de Annesley to be daughter and heir of the said John. She was first married to George Chaworth the third son of Sir Thomas Caworth, as in Wiverton, where the descent is placed, may be seen, from whom the Rt. Hon. Patricius Viscount Chaworth of Armagh, as heir male lineally descended, inherits this Mannor, and now makes it his principal residence, where he hath also a most pleasant Park, which by removing away some houses, he hath lately made to come up so near the House, as to be contiguous to the Gardens.
  • (fn. 22) Fines levied 23 H. 6, and 32 H. 6, it appears one Isabell, then the wife of Robert Shrigley, Esquire, held the third part of this Mannor in Dower, and released it to John Viscount Beaumont, Reginald Leigh, (who was second husband of the before-named Alice, the heir of Annesley) and James Leigh, Esquire, and others.

  • Joan Chaworth (died 29 August 1507) was the heiress of the manor of Alfreton.[1][2] Her father was Sir William Chaworth.
  • Joan Chaworth was the daughter of Sir William Chaworth (d.1467) and Elizabeth Bowett, daughter and coheir of Nicholas Bowett of Rippingale, Lincolnshire.[3] She was the granddaughter of Sir Thomas Chaworth (d.1459), who had four sons, Sir William Chaworth (d.1467), John Chaworth (d. 1464), Sir Thomas Chaworth (d. May 1465), and George Chaworth (d.1466).[4]
  • In 1465 Joan's father, Sir William, was described as 'a sickly man', unable even to ride,[4] and died within two years. Joan's only brother, Thomas Chaworth (1457–1483), married Margaret Talbot, daughter of John Talbot, 2nd Earl of Shrewsbury, and sister of John Talbot, 3rd Earl of Shrewsbury,[5] but became a lunatic and died without issue in 1483.[3][4]
  • Sir Thomas Chaworth's three younger sons had all also died by that time, and only the fourth son, George, had left surviving male issue. John Chaworth had been murdered in 1464, leaving an only son, Thomas, who died without issue in December 1485; Sir Thomas Chaworth had died without issue in May 1465; and George Chaworth had died in 1466, leaving a young grandson, George Chaworth (d.1521), who inherited the manors of Wiverton and Edwalton, and was ancestor of George Chaworth (d.1639), created Viscount Chaworth of Armagh in 1628.[4] With the death of Joan's brother Thomas in 1483, the male Chaworth line was thus all but extinguished, and Joan, as her brother's heir at law, inherited most of the extensive Chaworth estates.[3][4]

  • Annesley Hall is a Grade II listed country house near Annesley in Nottinghamshire, England and the ancestral home of the Chaworth-Musters family.
  • The Hall dates from the mid-13th century and was the home of the Annesley family, passing to the Chaworth family when Alice, heiress to the Manor of Annesley, married George Chaworth, third son of Sir Thomas Chaworth of Wiverton, in the 15th century. The Chaworth family were to possess the estate for the next 350 years. It was significantly enlarged and improved by Patrick Chaworth, 3rd Viscount Chaworth in the 17th century when damage to his family seat at Wiverton obliged him to move to Annesley.
