About Sir Gerrard Fleetwood, Knt.

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Fleetwood-37

Sir Gerrard Fleetwood was born about 1582.[1][2][3]

His father was Sir William Fleetwood MP (1551–1616) of Cranford, Middlesex; that historic county is now part of the London borough of Hounslow, just east of Heathrow Airport. His mother was Jane Clifton (1552–1627), who was the daughter of William Clifton (–1584) of Barrington, Somerset.

Gerrard was the 5th of 10 children, with 5 brothers and 4 sisters.

He married four times.

  1. At age 18 on 17 January 1599, Gerrard Fleetwood married his first wife, Jane Lambert. She was the daughter of William Lambert of Maiden Bradley, Wiltshire. Earlier, she had been the long-time mistress of Sir William Pawlett knight, and she had 4 illegitimate sons (William, John, Hercules, and Hector) and a daughter (Susan) with him; she had no children with Gerrard. She was buried on 12 March 1618.
  2. About 1620, he married Mary Dutton. She was the daughter of William Dutton of Sherborne, Gloucestershire. She was the widow of George Fettiplace of Coln St. Aldwyn, Gloucestershire. She had 1 son and 2 daughters.
  3. After 1634, Isabel Neville. She was the daughter of Hercy Neville of Grove, Nottinghamshire. She was the widow successively of Sir Richard Harpur of Hemington, Leicestershire and Sir Peter Frescheville of Staveley, Derbyshire. She had no children. She was buried on 24 November 1642.
  4. Lastly, he married Anne. She was identified as "Dame Anne Fleetwood" as his wife, relict, and executor in Gerrard's will in 1657. She had no children. She died in 1690/1.

Gerrard only had children (1 son and 2 daughters) with his 2nd wife Mary Dutton.

  1. Dutton Fleetwood (1623–bef.1657). He matriculated Queen's College in Oxford University at age 16 on 11 October 1639;[4] he married Anne Salisbury [Salisberry] on 21 December 1641 in St Clement Danes, Middlesex,[5] daughter of Sir Henry Salisbury of Llewenny, Denbighshire, Wales; they had a son Sir Gerrard Dutton Fleetwood, who was a beneficiary of his grandfather Gerrard's will; Dutton Fleetwood died within his father's lifetime (before Dec 1657–Feb 1658) because he was not mentioned in Gerrard's will.
  2. Elizabeth (Fleetwood) (Dowse) Kekewich. She would first marry Thomas Dowse, and then George Kekewich. She had a son Thomas Dowse (Douce/Douse) with her 1st husband, who was mentioned as a grandson in Gerrard's will. Also she had a daughter Mary with her 2nd husband who only lived to about 11 years old. Elizabeth Kekewich was identified as Gerrard's daughter in his will.
  3. daughter [Anne?] (Fleetwood) Gifford. She was mentioned as his daughter in the Gerrard's will, as well as his grandson Richard Giffford #2 (?–1662). He was the son and heir of Sir Richard Gifford #1, Knight (1577–1643). Supposedly, Sir Richard Gifford #1 initially married Sir Gerrard Fleetwood's daughter (Anne ?). There was a nameless wife of Richard Gifford #2 of King Somborne (a parish close to Crawley, where Gerrard lived). Then as a widower, he married Winifred Wallop; their children included 2 sons (1 died within father's lifetime) and 4 daughters (2 died before father).

Gerrard was knighted on 9 July 1603, although the Knights of England document shows 14 July 1603.

He held the following offices: [1] 1608: Freeman, Southampton 1611–?42: Ranger, Woodstock Park, Oxfordshire 1629–1641 (at least): Gentleman of the Privy Chamber (Extraordinary) under King Charles I 1641: Commissioner poll tax, Hampshire 1643–4: Raising money (royalist)

Gerrard Fleetwood died in Crawley, Southampton, after his will was written on 27 November 1657 and revised on 6 December 1657, and before 26 February 1658 when his estate passed probate.[6][7]

See Will of Sir Gerrard Fleetwood for a summary and transcription of his will from the National Archives.
