About Sir Henry Griffith II, 2nd Baronet of Burton Agnes

Sir Henry had NO SURVIVING SONS. Samuel Griffith of Maryland was NOT HIS SON.

Henry Griffith II first married Mary [Elizabeth] Willoughby, daughter of Sir Henry Willoughby of Risley [who had NO DAUGHTER MARY OR MARGARET, but DID have two daughters named Elizabeth - it was the older one who married Sir Henry], in 1621. They had no children and Mary died before 1633. He next married Dorothy Bellingham, daughter of Sir Henry Bellingham of Levens in Westmorland, in 1633. They had no children. Dorothy died before 1635. He then married Margaret Wortley, daughter of Sir Francis Wortley of Sheffield on 17 Jan 1635. Margaret gave birth to a son, Wortley, who was born and died in 1636. He is buried at Alrewas in Staffordshire. Margaret had a daughter, not named, who was born in 1640 and died before she could be baptised. A third child, Grace, was born and died in 1641. There is a monument to the girls in Tatenhill Church dated 18 Dec 1641. There is also a monument to Sir Henry Griffith and his first two wives in Burton Agnes Church. In his will, Sir Henry named his youngest nephew, Gustavus Boynton, as his executor and next of kin.

The Griffith Baronetcy, of Burton Agnes in the County of York, was created in the Baronetage of England on 7 June 1627 for Henry Griffith. The title became extinct on the death of his son, the second Baronet, in 1656. The family seat was Burton Agnes Hall, Burton Agnes, Yorkshire. Frances Griffith, daughter and sole heiress of the first Baronet, married Sir Matthew Boynton, 1st Baronet, through which marriage the house came into the Boynton family.
