About Sir Hugh Montgomery, 2nd Viscount of the Great Ards
Hugh Montgomery, 2nd Viscount Montgomery of the Ards, (1597–1642) was an Irish aristocrat who supported the Royalist cause in the Wars of the Three Kingdoms.
2nd Viscount Montgomerie, succeeded his father at the age of 39. After a liberal education, he traveled abroad. In 1637, he was made a member of Privy Council. In the great rebellion he was appointed Colonel, and took an active part in military movements in Ireland. 1

Montgomery was born in 1597 son of Hugh Montgomery, 1st Viscount Montgomery of the Ards, Ireland,[1] and Sara Maxwell, daughter of Sir John Maxwell, 4th Lord Herries of Terregles. [NO - his mother was 1st wife Elizabeth Shaw.]. Montgomery was a colonel in the Royalist army during the Irish Rebellion of 1641.[2] He died on 15 November 1642.[1]
Montgomery married Jane, eldest daughter of William Alexander, 1st Earl of Stirling, Secretary of State for Scotland. (d. autumn 1670), who survived him and remarried to Major-General Robert Monro.[1] By his wife he had four children:
- Hugh Montgomery, 1st Earl of Mount Alexander, eldest son and heir;
- James Montgomery;
- Henry Montgomery;
- Elizabeth Montgomery.[3] married William Montgomery of Rosemount.
