Death

A date and place of death has not been identified for Sir James Edmonstone of that Ilk and Ednam. here treated. He was alive on 5 August 1458, the date upon which his son Sir John had a charter under the Great Seal of Scotland confirming that his father had resigned the lands of Ednam in his favour, RMS 1424-1513: charter number 607 but he died before 19 February 1464, when a notorial instrument confirming his marriage to Janet Napier was executed. NRS: GD16/44/1

Sir James Edmonstone of that Ilk and Ednam married Janet Napier. On 1 February1456-57 she and her husband had a charter under the great Seal of Scotland which confirmed their joint possession of the thanage and barony of Boyne in the sheriffdom of Banff, and the lands of Tulliallan in the sheriffdom of Perth. 10 October 1457: Decree of Transumpt issued from commissary of St. Andrews in Lothian i.e. John of Ottyrburne, licentiate in decreets, rector of parish church of Libertoun, in diocese of Glasgow at instance of Sir James Edmonstoune of that Ilk, knight, of (1) Charter under Great Seal, dated 17 Mar., 1368/9, to John of Edmaundestoune, knight, of thanedom of Boyne in sheriffdom of Banff, to be held as free barony, with annualrent of £4 Scots furth of town of Banff, and (2) Charter under Great Seal, dated 1 Feb., 1456/7, following on resignation by James of Edmondestoune of that Ilk, knight, into hands of the Crown for new infeftment to said James and Janet Naper, daughter of Alexander Naper of Merchamston, in conjunct fee, of thanedom of Bune, in sheriffdom of Banff, and lands of Tulliallaine, in sheriffdom of Perth. 19 September 1464: Notarial instrument narrating that sir Alexander Hundby, formerly curate at the parish church of St. Giles in Edinburgh, declared and certified that in January 1457 he had proclaimed the banns for the marriage of the deceased Sir James Edmondstone of that ilk, kt., and Janet Napare, daughter of Alexander Napare of Mercharstoune, now a knight, and on the Feast of St. Scholastica the Virgin [February 10] in the said year had performed the said marriage. 25 February 1485: Charter by which Elizabeth Edmonstone of Tulliallan confirms that she has exchanged her half share of the thanedome of Boyne, together with her half share of an annualrent of six merks, for her sister Margaret Edmonstone's half share of the lands of Tulliallan. Elizabeth is identified as one of the heirs of the deceased James Edmonstone of that Ilk and Ednam. She made the exchange with the consent of her husband Patrick Blackadder, Her charter was confirmed under the Great Seal of Scotland on 3 March 1485-86. RMS 1424-1513: charter number 1644
