Sir James Gambier was a diplomat. He served in Lisbon, Brazil and the Netherlands.

He married Jemima Snell in England in 1797.

He also had a relationship with an unknown woman which produced Capt. James FitzJames, RN, who perished on the Franklin Expedition of 1845 somewhere on King William Island. He was unmarried.
