About Sir John Fortescue of Salden, 1st Baronet
Biographical Summary
"John Fortescue, of Salden, in Mursley, Bucks., son and heir of Sir John Fortescue, K.B., of the same, by Grace (married before 1590), daughter of the Hon. Sir John Manners, of Haddin, co Derby (which Francis was son of Sir John Fortescue, Chancellor of the Exchequer, who purchased the estate of Salden in 1590, and died 23 December 1607, aged 76), was baptized at Mursley, 1592; matriculated at Oxford (Merton Coll.) 11 July 1606, aged 12; admitted to Inner Temple, 1612; succeeded his father in January 1623/4 and was created a Baronet [S] 17 February 1635/6, the patent not being entered in the Great Seal Register [S], with rem. to heirs male whatsoever, and with a grant of, presumably, 16,000 acres in Nova Scotia, of which he never had seizin. In the Civil War, he was in arms on the King's side and was taken prisoner, May 1644, near Islip, Oxon. He married Frances, daughter of Sir Edward Stanley, K.B., of Ensham, Oxom. He died September 1656, and was buried at Mursley."

Matriculated at Merton College, Oxford, July 11, 1606, aged 12. Admitted to the Inner Temple, 1612. During the Civil War he was in arms on the King's side and was taken prisoner near Islip, Oxfordshire, May 1644. Administration of his estate was granted, November 6, 1656.
