About Sir John Hamilton, of the Ross

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hamilton-4768

His entry in The Peerage is:

"Sir John Hamilton of Fingaltoun is the son of Sir John Hamilton of Fingaltoun and unknown daughter Keith. He married, firstly, Jane Lyddell, daughter of Sir James Lyddell.[5] He married, secondly, Anna de Seton, daughter of Sir William de Seton and Janet Fleming. He fought in the Battle of Homildon Hill on 14 September 1402.[6]

He is said, by Anderson[7] and others, to have been married twice. Firstly to Jane Lydell, daughter and heiress of Sir James Lyddell of Preston. This first marriage is clearly correct as it is from this marriage that the family of Hamilton acquire the estates of Preston and by which they will become known.

There are two children, sons from this marriage:

  1. Sir James Hamilton, whom we can presume was born 1385/1390 and who will inherit the estates.
  2. John Hamilton, who will become the progeniture of the Hamiltons of Ellershaw.

Contention

There is notice in Anderson and others of a second marriage, to Anna, said to be the 6th daughter of Sir William Seton, of that Ilk, ancestor to the Earl of Winton. This is sourced to Maitland, a family historian for the family of Seton who has been proven to be incorrect in regards to this family and confuses him with his grandson. Neither Balfour Paul or Sir Bruce Gordon Seton, the more accurate of the early family historians of that family, agree with Maitland and prove otherwise. It is likely that this "Anna" is a daughter of the grandson, if she existed at all.
