Biographical Summary
"Son and heir of George Maxwell of Auldhouse, (afterwards Sir George Maxwell of Nether Pollock), and of Annabella, daughter of Sir Archibald Stewart of Blackhall, was created a Baronet, by King Charles the Second, 12th April 1682...
...He was imprisoned in July 1683, for refusing to take the test, and brought before the Privy Council 2d December 1684, when a fine of L.8000 was imposed on him, for allowing rebels to live upon his lands, and refusing the bond and test. The Council, however, stipulated, that this fine would be subject to a reduction of L.2000, if it was paid before January 1685. He was examined as a witness at the trial of Sir John Cochrane on the 22d May 1685. He was nominated a Privy Councillor by King William, in 1689; represented the county of Renfrew, at the Convention of Estates 1689, in Parliament 1690-3, 5-6, and 1698; and in 1696 was constituted one of the Lords of the Treasury and Exchequer...
...He was appointed to succeed Lord Newbyth as an ordinary Lord, 6th February 1699, and took his seat on the 17th of that month. In the same year he obtained a commission, dated 14th of February, nominating him Justice Clerk, in the room of Adam Cockburn of Ormiston, who was then made Treasurer Depute. He was superseded in his office of Justice Clerk in 1702, by Roderick Mackenzie of Prestonhall; but retained his situation as an ordinary Lord till his death, which took place at Nether Pollock, on the 4th of July 1732, in the 90th year of his age."
